HOW WE SELECT THE FARLAND FIVE

A curated universe. A proprietary ranking model. Five opportunities.

Quality first. Opportunity second. Structure third.

Each trading day, Farland Capital applies its proprietary opportunity-ranking model to our curated ESPP universe of 177 companies—businesses selected with an emphasis on quality, durability and our willingness to own the shares if assigned.

The model searches for moments when business quality, price weakness and elevated option premium converge. It evaluates 14-day RSI, distance from the 21-day EMA, 50-day SMA and 200-day SMA, proximity to the 52-week low, IV Rank, current implied volatility, five-day volatility expansion, price momentum and option-market activity. Oversold conditions—particularly RSI below 30—and unusually rapid increases in implied volatility can receive significant opportunity bonuses, while deteriorating trends, excessive fragility and event risk can reduce or eliminate an otherwise attractive candidate.

Farland then evaluates the options market for the highest-ranked underlyings, generally targeting 30–45 days to expiration and 20–25 delta puts, with consideration given to implied volatility, open interest, volume and contract quality. The model rewards combinations we believe are especially attractive—for example, a high-quality company experiencing a short-term pullback while its long-term trend remains intact and option premiums are expanding.

The result is not simply a list of stocks with the highest IV or lowest RSI. It is a multi-factor ranking of opportunity versus risk. The five highest-conviction complete setups become that trading day's Farland Five. Once published, the list is frozen for the day.

01

The ESPP Universe

177 curated companies we consider suitable candidates for an assignment-oriented put-selling strategy.

02

Opportunity Detection

RSI, 21 EMA, 50 SMA, 200 SMA and 52-week context identify pullbacks and oversold conditions without blindly rewarding falling prices.

03

Volatility Edge

IV Rank, current IV and five-day IV expansion identify situations where option sellers may be unusually well compensated.

04

Contract & Risk Selection

30–45 DTE, 20–25 delta, option activity, liquidity, earnings risk and downside fragility determine whether an opportunity deserves a place in the Five.
